Wide-Angle Point-and-Shoot – Canon PowerShot SD800 IS

by on Feb.11, 2009, under Digital Cameras

The PowerShot SD800 IS is the latest edition to the Canon family. Canon, known for their image quality and practicality, has not fallen short with this model. With its shapely curves, glistening accents, and durable frame, the PowerShot SD800 is another point-and-shoot camera that offers attractiveness and functionality.

The PowerShot SD800 IS is constructed of metal (great durability), offers many shiny accents, is only 1-inch thick, and only weighs six ounces. Even though the overall dimensions of this model, appear to be small, it is not quite as small as some of its competitors. While the natural curvature, of the PowerShot SD800, fits nicely in the curves of your hand, some of the buttons are so small they are difficult to find and click.

Regardless of size, Canon has implemented a 207,000-pixel 2.5-inch LCD display, on the back of the camera. Due to the high pixel resolution, consumers can review their images in extreme high quality format. One thing that is missing, from the LCD screen, is a battery life indicator. Unless you charge your battery, on a regular basis, you could be stuck without a battery since there is no warning.

You can easily reach the 4-way navigational buttons with your thumb, if you are holding the camera in your right hand. All adjustments and settings are available through the use of the 4-way navigational menu. You also have the option of manual or automatic mode with automatic offering more options.

ISO settings, on the PowerShot SD800, will allow for adjustments of up to 1,600. The only purpose for adjusting the ISO settings, this high, is to capture snap shots in low light or high movement environments. The fact that the images are grainy, and the camera is loud, at this setting, may not be a hindrance if you do not shoot photos in the listed environments.

The 28mm-equivilan wide shot lens, with 3.8x zoom, opens a new door for point-and-shoot photographers. The PowerShot SD800 is one of the first point-and-shoot cameras that can take wide-angle shots. Additionally, the 3.8x zoom offers’ better zoom ratios than many other cameras offer.

The PowerShot SD800 would not be a Canon without the use of their Digic III software. This software helps to increase battery life and performance, along with raising the quality of images taken. Additionally, with the integration of Digic III, the PowerShot SD800 can recognize up to 9 faces in a given photo. Blur, caused from shaky hands, is nearly eliminated with the image stabilization that Digic III offers.

There are a handful of other functionalities, available on this model. One of which is the burst mode. Burst mode allows you to take multiple sequential pictures with just one click. You can also video different events with 30fps VGA to 60fps QVGA output available. A 16MB memory card comes with every model of the PowerShot SD800. An additional memory card will be needed, as this size will only store a handful of high quality images.

Canon’s PowerShot SD800 IS is sold from many different venues with a wide range of sticker prices – $200 – $400. Prior to purchasing this model, it is highly suggested that you look around to make sure you get the best deal available.

The PowerShot SD800 IS is the product of one of the most infamous camera makers – Canon. Regardless of a few minor quirks, the camera takes high quality pictures, is easy to travel with, has a durable frame, and is backed by a very well known manufacturer.
